How Heating and Cooling Systems Work

An HVAC system, which stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, functions to keep your house comfortable throughout the seasons. It is responsible for controlling the air temperature, humidity level and indoor air quality. There are three necessary components to an HVAC system: a source for warm or cool air, a way to distribute the air, and the control used to adjust and regulate heating and cooling settings, such as a thermostat. Cooling and heating services in the Chapel Hill area are provided by Boer Brothers. We fully understand HVAC systems and provide helpful information, expert service and affordable options for AC and heating services.

Chapel Hill AC Services and Heating Services
At Boer Brothers, we provide complete services for both heating and air conditioning systems, such as installation, repairs and maintenance. The ductwork in homes and buildings is the same for both AC and heating systems, and the difference is that a heating system such as a furnace takes outdoor air and warms it before distributing, and an air conditioner takes the warm indoor air and cools it for a more comfortable indoor temperature. For a central heating and cooling system, a centralized location is used to create warm or cool air, which is then moved to the other rooms of the home.

A variety of systems function as central systems. The two main types are split systems and packaged systems. What’s the difference?

Split System: The split AC system has an outdoor metal cabinet and an indoor cabinet that is typically located in an attic or closet. The indoor cabinet also usually contains a furnace. A refrigerant line connects the outdoor and indoor units. A condenser and compressor are inside of the outdoor cabinet and an evaporator is inside of the indoor cabinet. A fan is located in both cabinets to circulate the air flow throughout the home. Most new homes have this type of system, since it is cost effective and energy efficient.

Packaged AC System: One cabinet, usually on the roof of a home, contains the condenser, compressor and evaporator. Electric heating coils or a natural gas furnace may also be included, for a self-contained unit. Cheaper installation costs apply since there is only one location, and this setup is good for space savings. These types of systems typically have lower energy efficiency.
